1. I want someone who is willing to play with my child, take them to activities as well as help them with lessons or unit studies.

Your best option is likely an Au Pair.

Au Pair
/əʊ ˈpɛː/
noun
A young foreign person, typically a woman, who helps with housework or childcare in exchange for food, a room, and some pocket money.
Source: Oxford Languages

An Au Pair can be an excellent help to the homeschooling parent who wants to educate their children at home, but doesn’t have the time to get to everything. An Au Pair can come in and help fill the gaps and get to those creative activities, hands-on learning, and messy art that children so enjoy. An Au Pair can also taxi children to their different activities, and can even help oversee learning activities such as read-alouds, learning their abc’s and simple maths. An Au Pair is an option for assistance that works well for children through grade 3.

To find an Au Pair, consider asking on your local homeschool group’s facebook page, on their chat group, or through your local friend groups.

2. I want someone who is willing to take ownership of my child’s classes, making sure they are learning maths concepts, writing skills, or other subjects by planning and implementing lessons.

It looks like you might need a tutor!

Tutor
/ˈtjuːtə/
noun
A private teacher, typically one who teaches a single pupil or a very small group.
Source: Oxford Languages

A tutor is an experienced educator. This might be someone who has experience giving certain classes, like a fellow homeschool parent, a certified teacher, or even a University student looking to tutor as a side job. After you have gathered referrals, interview potential tutors and explain your needs and expectations. Let them meet your student(s) to make sure that they can work well together. Most tutors are paid by the hour, so you will want to book times each week for the tutor to come to your house. Some families will book one session per week per subject, others will hire a full time tutor to oversee all student work; this will depend on your needs and budget.

We are in the process of building a directory of tutors and you might find someone to contact there. Alternatively, Facebook is an excellent resource where you'll be able to ask around on homeschooling groups about where to find tutors near you.

3. I want a small home-style environment outside of my own home, where my children can safely learn under supervision.

A cottage school/learning centre might be your best option.

Cottage schools/learning centres can vary widely in their setup and offering, but generally comprise of a home-like environment where supervised learners can safely work away from home (some even offer electronic equipment for students to use). Though these centres do not fall under the umbrella of homeschooling in themselves, their facilities serve homeschoolers and offer an excellent alternative to mainstream schooling.

A word of caution: it goes without saying that it's of the utmost importance to do your research thoroughly and check into the facility where your children will go in order to ensure their safety!

We are in the process of building a directory of cottage schools/learning centres and you might find someone to contact there. Alternatively, asking around on homeschool Facebook groups and Googling phrases like "learning centre near me" will get you started.
